Pandino

On a misty morning of November, the Hairy Half and I went for a trip to Pandino, a small town around an hour's drive from Milan.

We went for lunch at Osteria degli Amici, a fairly famous restaurant that in Via Maggiore 18, in the hamlet of Gradella. All the food was interesting, but in the end we chose the 15€ menu of the day.

I chose the most autumnal dishes, pumpkin risotto and rabbit stuffed with chestnuts. I also took the ratatouille. It was all delicious! My husband took the lasagna that was not so great and the chicken rolls that were really yummy, with the grilled peppers side dish.
Then we also split the pear and chocolate tart, exceptional.
I would like to go back an evening to try the a la carte menu.

After eating we went for a walk around Gradella, which is in the list of the most beautiful hamlets in Italy. It was a nice place, with yellow houses with red brick outlines and various karst springs, but I didn't like it as much as I hoped.

We went to visit the Visconteo Castle. I stopped to do some shopping at the saturday market just in front of the square, waiting for the 4:00PM guided tour (4€ per head). We were lucky because we were the only tourists. The guide, Mrs. Ivana, was really good, full of interesting and entertaining anecdotes.

The castle today hosts the municipality, library and the canteen of the dairy school (once it was also its dormitory).

The castle was built in the mid 14th century by the lord of Milan Bernabò Visconti. It has the typical plant of the Visconti castles built at that time in the plains: square with four towers at the corners, a porch with acute arches on the inside and a loggia with square pillars on the noble floor.
At the time of its construction, the castle was completely frescoed (stables and prison included!) and most of these paintings, mainly made up of geometric figures, are still visible today. This and the fact that it has undergone few changes over the centuries (only the ones to make it stronger and easier to defend) make it one of the best preserved castles in the whole region.
The least ruined frescoes were those on the second floor, where there was also a wonderful painted architecture in perspective.

The pieces on display are clearly affected by Stropa's architecture studies, futuristic influences and fascist culture.
There were several interesting things, such as a series of very elaborate but seemingly unnecessary machines, and above all, the projects of a traveling library and of an airplane for Rizzoli.
