Le brigate fantasma/The Ghost Brigades

"Le brigate fantasma" (in originale "The Ghost Brigades") è il secondo romanzo ambientato nell'universo di "Morire per vivere" dello scrittore statunitense John Scalzi, pubblicato nel 2006.

E' preceduto da "Morire per vivere" (Old Man's War) del 2005, e seguito da "L'ultima colonia" (The Last Colony) del 2007 e "Zoe's Tale" del 2008. La serie comprende anche "The Human Division", pubblicato a puntate e raccolto in un romanzo nel 2013, e "The End of All Things", un libro composto da quattro racconti brevi, pubblicato nel 2015.

I primi tre libri sono stati pubblicati in italiano dalla Gargoyle.

Il protagonista è Jared Dirac, un soldato delle Forze Speciali, soprannominate "Le brigate fantasma" in quanto soldati che ne fanno parte sono creati a partire dal materiale genetico di anziani morti prima di completare l'arruolamento nell'esercito dell'Unione Coloniale, l'organizzazione che controlla la colonizzazione umana dello spazio. Jared però è speciale, perché è stato creato a partire dal DNA di Boutin, uno scienziato traditore, e ha ricevuto l'imprinting della sua mente, per recuperare le informazioni in suo possesso.

Rispetto al primo libro è più cervellotico e più pesante, soprattutto perché manca la narrazione in prima persona a sdrammatizzare le parti più dense di informazioni tecniche e a creare empatia con il lettore. Nonostante alcune idee narrative brillanti, come l'inizio ispirato ad un famoso racconto di Arthur C. Clarke, e una trama non perfetta, ma funzionante, l'ho trovato decisamente inferiore al predecessore. Il finale però connette i due primi capitoli e fa sperare in un terzo romanzo al livello del primo.

It's preceded by "Old Man's War", published in 2005, and followed by "The Last Colony", published in 2007 and "Zoe's Tale", published in 2008. The series also includes "The Human Division," published as episodes and collected into a novel in 2013, and "the End of All Things," a book made up of four short stories, published in 2015.

The protagonist is Jared Dirac, a soldier of the Special Forces, nicknamed "The Ghost Brigades" as the soldiers who are part of it are created from the genetic material of elderly people who died before completing the enrollment in the army of the Colonial Defense Force, the organization that leads human colonization of space. But Jared is special, because he was created from the DNA of Boutin, a traitor scientist, and received the imprint of his mind, to retrieve the information in his possession.

Compared to the first book it abstruser and heavier, mainly because it lacks the first-person narrative to downplay the parts with a lot of technical information and create empathy with the reader. Despite some brilliant narrative ideas, like the beginning inspired by a famous tale by Arthur C. Clarke, and a plot that is not perfect but works, I found it of a lower level than the previous book. But the ending connects the first two chapters of the saga and gives hope for a third novel at the level of the first.
