L'ultima colonia/The Last Colony (John Scalzi)

"L'ultima colonia" (The Last Colony) è il terzo romanzo ambientato nell'universo di "Morire per vivere" dello scrittore statunitense John Scalzi, pubblicato nel 2007.

E' preceduto da "Morire per vivere" (Old Man's War) del 2005 e da "Le brigate fantasma" (The Ghost Brigades) del 2006, e seguito da "Zoe's Tale" del 2008. La serie comprende anche "The Human Division", pubblicato a puntate e raccolto in un romanzo nel 2013, e "The End of All Things", un libro composto da quattro racconti brevi, pubblicato nel 2015.

I primi tre libri sono stati pubblicati in italiano dalla Gargoyle.

In questo terzo libro torna ad essere protagonista e voce narrante John Perry, ormai novantenne, in un corpo giovane, forte e di nuovo pienamente umano. Finalmente John è riuscito a costruire una vita tranquilla e quasi normale con la sua piccola famiglia, quando si ritrova di nuovo al centro dei piani dell'Unione Coloniale, l'organizzazione che dirige la colonizzazione umana dello spazio. Infatti lui e sua moglie vengono chiamati alla guida della prima colonia fondata da persone provenienti dai nuovi mondi colonizzati invece che dalla Terra. Ma è solo la punta dell'iceberg di un complotto politico molto più complesso...

Il punto di vista di Perry riporta al tono ironico del primo libro e rende questo terzo romanzo più scorrevole e interessante del secondo che aveva un narratore esterno. Essendo il terzo di una serie, perde la freschezza del primo e si caratterizza come una space opera abbastanza classica, con una visione sostanzialmente positiva del futuro. Riesce comunque a costruire una trama funzionante e a risultare gradevole per il lettore, con continui colpi di scena che mantengono vivo l'interesse, nonostante un paio di momenti che avrebbero meritato un maggiore approfondimento o una spiegazione (e che infatti sono stati la causa principale della nascita del quarto libro).

It's preceded by "Old Man's War", published in 2005,"The Ghost Brigades", published in 2006 and followed by "Zoe's Tale", published in 2008. The series also includes "The Human Division," published as episodes and collected into a novel in 2013, and "the End of All Things", a book made up of four short stories, published in 2015.

In this third book John Perry, now ninety, in a young body, strong and fully human again, comes back as protagonist and narrator. John finally managed to build a peaceful and almost normal life with his small family, when he finds himself back at the center of the plans of Colonial Union, the organization that leads the human colonization of space. In fact, he and his wife are called to guide the first colony founded by people from the new colonized worlds rather than from Earth. But it is only the tip of the iceberg of a much more complex political plot ...

Perry's point of view takes back to the ironic tone of the first book, and makes this third novel easier and more interesting novel than the second that had an external narrator. Being the third in a series, it looses the freshness of the first one and is characterized as a classic space opera, with a basically positive view of the future. It still manages to build a plot that works well and and is pleasing to the reader, with constant twists that keep the interest alive, despite a couple of moments that deserved further study or explanation (and in fact this is the main cause a fourth book was written).
