In Giappone il 5 Maggio è il giorno dei bambini maschi (こどもの日 Kodomo no hi). In molti altri paesi asiatici come la Cina e la Corea il 5 giorno del 5 mese lunare si festeggiano i bambini. Questo giorno per il calendario lunare segna anche l'inizio dell'estate.
In Giappone l'usanza è di appendere fuori casa delle maniche a vento a forma di carpa, una per ogni bambino, la più grande per il maggiore e così via. I bambini espongono in casa bambole raffiguranti samurai ed eroi e si mangiano dolci speciali.
Tutti i simboli di questa festa (carpe, samurai...) sono anche simboli della forza e della salute che ci si augura che il bambino abbia.
Esiste anche un corrispettivo per le bambine, l'Hinamatsuri(雛祭り), il 3 marzo.
In Japan the 5th of May is Children Day (こどもの日 Kodomo no hi), a day dedicated to male children. In many other asian countries like China and Corea there's a similar celebration on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month. In the lunar calendar this day signs also the start of summer.
In Japan there's the tradition of raise outdoor a pole with cloth carp streamers, one for each male child, the bigger for the older and so on. The children also do a display of dolls shaped like samurai and heroes at home and there are special sweet for this festivity.
All the symbols of this celebrations (carps, samurai...) are also symbols of the strengh and health families wish for their cildren.
Ther is a similar holiday for female children, Hinamatsuri(雛祭り), on the 3rd of March.
