La La Land

A man and a woman dancing at sunset; a city view stretches out behind them. The woman is wearing a bright yellow dress, her partner is wearing a white coloured shirt and tie with dark pants.

It focuses on the desire to become an artist and on the need to reconcile the dreams with daily needs.
The film is set in a Los Angeles populated by the ghosts of the artists who worked there. The protagonists are Mia (Emma Stone), an aspiring actress who works as a waitress, and Sebastian (Ryan Gosling), a talented musician who aspires to reopen an historic jazz club. The two will meetwhile chasing for their dreams.

The photography was directed by Linus Sandgren who created a classic Hollywood CinemaScope, 50s style. The sets were made by David Wasco and Sandy Reynolds-Wasco. The costumes were made by Mary Zophres, who chose clothes bright primary colors to honor Hollywood's Technicolor films.
"La La Land" quotes several times the '50s and' 60s musicals from which it draws heavily.
This film has received tons of awards and almost unanimously enthusiastic opinions by the critics. I found it extremely well made, well acted, with beautiful music and beautiful costumes. Plus, the plot is not banala as it might have been. Yet at the end of the vision of "La La Land", I felt it left me really little. In short, beautiful, but without a real soul.

A me quel che è rimasto è ascoltarmi City of stars a nastro.
