Anna (Ammaniti)

"Anna" is a 2015 novel by the italian writer Niccolò Ammaniti.
It's set in 2020 in a post-apocalyptic Sicily, whose adult population was exterminated by an epidemic. On the island there are only children left, but even them are not safe: in fact the virus is latent in the entire population and unleashes when they reach puberty.
The protagonist is the 13 year old Anna, who managed to survive four years with her little brother Astor thanks to the instructions that her mother wrote in a notebook before dying.
But in the new world populated by children the old rules are not enough and Anna and Astor, to survive, have to write new ones, especially when a series of unforeseen events forces them to leave the relative safety of their home and embark on a desperate journey.
By Ammaniti I had read only the beautiful "I'm Not Scared", released in 2001. Like that,"Anna" is a really well written book which sees children as protagonists, that is brutal in the narration and leaves a bitter aftertaste.
In this book, not only the world is dangerous and difficult, but to become adult kills. It's a coming of age story in which the only possible conclusion would be death... if it weren't for a glimmer of hope that can't be extinguished.
The post-apocalyptic scenario is extremely credible, written in a realistic way that the gaze of children is able to transfigure with a fairytale touch. The characters are real children, not fairy tale heroes and, without the constraints of adults, they often act in disturbing ways.
The plot is not very original, if not for the setting, but the development is masterful.
"Anna" is a punch in the stomach that I recommend to take.
