Strega - Cronache dal Regno di Oz in rivolta/Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West (Gregory Maguire)

"Strega - Cronache dal Regno di Oz in rivolta" (Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West) è un romanzo del 1995 dello scrittore statunitense Gregory Maguire. E' il primo di una saga, a cui fanno seguito "Son of a Witch" (2005), "A Lion Among Men" (2008) e "Out of Oz" (2011), mai pubblicati in italiano.

"Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West" is a 1995 novel by US writer Gregory Maguire. It is the first of a saga, followed by "Son of a Witch" (2005), "A Lion Among Men" (2008) and "Out of Oz" (2011).
In 2003 this novel was asapted into a famous Broadway musical, "Wicked". To tell the truth, I decided to read the book because I have a friend who loves the musical so much that she cosplayed the protagonist, but later I found that the plot of the show differs quite a lot from the original, solving also some plot problems.
It is a new version of "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" by L. Frank Baum, with Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West as the protagonist. The novel has a much more adult tone than Baum's, as well as rather explicit sex and violence scenes.
The story is divided into three parts, dedicated respectively to the birth and early years, the school age and the adult age of Elphaba until her encounter and confrontation with Dorothy. I like variations of childhood classics , especially if they re-evaluate "bad" characters, but I found the story poorly managed.
The plot has many interesting ideas, but they get lost in the writing leaving the plots mostly unresolved.
The protagonist, who would have been a very interesting character, is always seen from the outside except in the third part, and many points in her story remain obscure. When the story is told from her point of view, the situation does not improve much: it is obvious that Maguire wants to make her a victim and a heroine, but it is difficult for the reader to empathize with Elphaba or to understand the rationality of her actions.
To worsen the situation, the author, through his characters, does continuous, ponderous and uninteresting ramblings about good and evil.
In the end I consider this novel to be a bad execution of a good idea and I don't recommend reading it. I surely won't read the next books.
But the musical seems different enough from the original to be interesting.
