A Madness of Angels (Kate Griffin)

"A Madness of Angels" is a 2009 novel by Kate Griffin, pseudonym of the British writer Catherine Webb. It's he first of a series of four books starring the urban sorcerer Matthew Swift. The others are "The Midnight Mayor", published in 2010, "The Neon Court", published in 2011, and "The Minority Council", published in 2012.
As for "Neverwhere" by Neil Gaiman (you can read my review here) and "Un Lun Dun" by China Mièville (you can read my review here), I read it because it is part of the list of urban fantasy novels set in London published some time ago by the blogger Amy Townsend, from which I am drawing all my latest readings both because I love urban fantasy, and because I am about to return to London.
"A Madness of Angels" is an urban fantasy novel intended for an adult target. The protagonist is Matthew Swift, who two years after he was killed, finds himself alive again in his old house. Matthew's only purpose of is survive and take revenge on the people who killed him. But Matthew is not just Matthew anymore. Inside him he lives something else, something that calls itself "blue electric angels".
The novel is well written, but the story didn't really catch me. The plot itself is very simple and linear, but more than that, the fault was of the style, which because of its attention to detail, accurate descriptions and long, formal dialogues, slows down the action. Plus I didn't really manage to get attached to the characters, who, tought being three-dimensional, I found quite uninteresting.
What I really liked of this book was the idea of "Urban Magic", based on the electric lights, telephones, waste gas and so on.

I do not think I will go on reading the series, even because the novel has a self contained plot, but I would not advice against it altogether.

Sorry you didn't enjoy this one so much! I really liked the descriptive writing style, but it does tend towards the overblown and I can imagine it could get annoying if you weren't particularly drawn in to the story. But YES, I loved the concept of magic in this one too!

It was a good book anyway and I'm happy I read it. Only somehow I couldn't get drawn into it, that is too bad.
