Ready Player One

Last week I went to watch "Ready Player One", the latest film by Steven Spielberg. It's the adaptation of the homonymous 2010 novel written by Ernest Cline (who participated with Zak Penn to the screenplay of the film).
It is set in a 2045 that is so devastated that most people regularly flee from their own troubles inside OASIS, a virtual reality videogame where everyone can be whatever they want to be and have fantastic experiences.
The creator of OASIS, James Halliday, at his death unlocked an easter egg in the game that can only be reached after overcoming a series of complicated tests with permadeath. Those who get it will inherit the whole virtual world.
The protagonist is Wade Watts, a teenager in the slums of Columbus, who, together with his friend Aech and many others, is on the hunt for the egg. Trying to pass the tests he meets Art3mis, Daito and Sho, other "gunters" (egg hunters). Together they finally manage to unblock the situation, ban evil multinational on the trail of Halliday's inheritance too.
The film is visually wonderful. The game has problems from the beginning: it is virtual reality, but it works like Kinect, so the players have to move in part in real life too. Is it possible that in 2045 the most popular game in the world cuts off disabled people?
But everything goes smoothly until is killed a character who should be important for the protagonist... and he doesn't bat an eye. Then comes a big wasted opportunity in the main love story. From there everything goes even worse: antagonists that are just too stupid, ridiculous escapes and even a moralistic ending on the style "video games are great, but reality can be better".
Ultimately I found this film a wasted opportunity, I would be curious to read the book to see if it has the same problems.
