Questo post è dedicato a "Cloud Atlas", il romanzo da cui è stato tratto l'ultimo dei fratelli Wachowski, che ha suscitato parecchi commenti per la sua regia innovativa.
Il romanzo segue sei storie, ambientate in periodi storici differenti, che vanno dal 1800 a un futuro indefinito, legate dal tema della trasmigrazione delle anime.
La narrazione ha una struttura a matrioska: la prima storia è l'ultima a finire e fa da cornice alla seconda, la seconda è la penultima a finire e fa da cornice alla terza, e così via.
La scrittura di Mitchell, per quanto si può capire da una traduzione, è molto buona. Oltre a narrare in modo scorrevole e appassionante, si vede che Mitchell si diverte a scrivere: in ognuna delle sei storie sperimenta uno stile differente, con numerosi giochi di metascrittura e prendendosi anche un po'in giro lungo la strada (uno dei personaggi giudica troppo pomposo il modo in cui è scritto il capitolo precedente, che in quel momento sta leggendo).
"Cloud Atlas" ricorda un po' "Se una notte d'inverno un viaggiatore" di Calvino: sembra un'accozzaglia di inizi di romanzi, poi recuperata e organizzata in una narrazione sperimentale, ma coerente.
Mi è piaciuto molto e lo consiglio molto sia a chi ha apprezzato il film sia a chi voglia semplicemente leggere un buon libro un po'diverso dal solito.
Differenze fra libro e film (attenzione, spoiler):
Ci sono varie differenze di struttura e di trama fra il libro e il film, ma secondo me senza i cambiamenti fatti dai registi, la narrazione avrebbe reso molto meno a livello cinematografico. Ovviamente al cinema è impensabile proporre una storia e sul più bello lasciare a metà per cominciarne un'altra, quindi la prima cosa ad essere cambiata è la struttura, che diventa lineare, con passaggi frequenti da una storia all'altra.
Tutte le storie nella trasposizione filmica subiscono sia dei tagli sia qualche modifica. Le storie maggiormente cambiate sono quella di Sonmi, il clone coreano, e quella di Zackry, il pastore del remoto futuro. La storia di Sonmi nel film perde moltissimo a livello di complessità di trama e anche il colpo di scena finale, ma probabilmente una trasposizione completa sarebbe risultata troppo densa o fuori fase rispetto alle altre storie. Invece nella storia di Zackry cambiano le età dei personaggi principali, la loro relazione e nel libro il finale è molto meno ottimista (sigh) e muore un personaggio in più.
Nella storia originale dell'editore muore un personaggio e il finale è leggermente diverso, ma la sostanza è la stessa. Nel film viene tolto un personaggio dalla storia del compositore, ma la trama è sostanzialmente identica all'originale. La storia del notaio, ambientata nell'800, è forse quella più fedele, anche se nel film risulta un po'accorciata.

The novel follows six stories, set in different historical periods, ranging from 1800 to an indefinite future, linked by the theme of the transmigration of souls.
The narration has a matrioska structure: the first story is the last to finish and is the frame of the second, the second is the penultimate to end and is the frame of the third, and so on.
Mitchell's writing, for what I can tell by a translation, is very good. In addition a fluent and exciting narration, you can feel that Mitchell likes to write: in each of the six stories he experiments a different style, does a lot of metawriting and makes fun of himself along the way (one of the character judges too pompous the way in which is written the chapter before, which at the time he is reading)."Cloud Atlas" reminds me a little '"If a winter's night a traveler" by Calvino as it seems a bunch of starts for differnt novels, rescued and organized into an experimental, but consistent narration.I liked it very much and would recommend it to those who have enjoyed the movie and those who simply want to read a good book a little different from the usual.
Difference between book and movie (spoiler alert):
There are several differences in structure and plot between the book and the movie, but I think without the changes made by the directors, the narration wouldn't had become a good film. Obviously in a film is unthinkable to propose a story and to leave it half told to start a new one, so the first thing to be changed was the structure, which becomes linear, with frequent transitions from one story to another.
All the stories in the film transposition underwent some changes and cuts. The most changed stories are that of Sonmi, the Korean clone, and of Zackry, the pastor of the distant future. The story of Sonmi loses a lot in the film at the level of complexity of the plot and also the final twist, but probably a complete transposition would be too dense or out of phase with the other stories. Instead in the history of Zackry the ages of the main characters and their relationship change and in the book the ending is far less optimistic (sigh) and one more character dies.In the original story of the editor a character dies and the ending is slightly different, but the substance is the same. In the film, a character is removed from the story of the composer, but the plot is essentially identical to the original. The history of the notary, set in '800, is perhaps the most faithful to the original, even if the film cuts it a bit.
