Viaggio di nozze in cina: 8 giugno, gita a Suzhou/Honeymoon in China: 8th of June, day trip to Suzhou

Today we decide to make a day trip to Sūzhōu (苏州), a key city for ancient China culture that inspired generations of artists, scholars, writers, and high ranked people.
From Shanghai Hongqiao station we took a bullet train (57 CNY), arriving to Suzhou [Jiangsu] Industrial Park half an hour later. From the station, we took bus 262 to get to the city centre.

Sūzhōu is famous for its gardens, and among them the Humble Administrator's Garden, in 178 Dongbei Jie, is considered one of the most beautiful in China, so it was our first visit (85 CNY).
This garden was built in 1509 by administrator Wang Xianchen to spend his old age. It contains ponds, beautiful plants and at least 10 pavilions. It is also one of the places where you can find the colorful mandarin ducks.
Wherever we turn, there is a glimpse worth of a photograph. Yet I found the Yuyuan Gardens more interesting.

Paghiamo 98 CNY.

The street just outside the gardens is full of stalls and shops, including a few restaurants, but we end up eating at a restaurant on the main street.
We take ravioli stuffed with meat and egg that are the first Chinese dish we do not like much. Fortunately the ramen of the Hairy Half is very good and also my savoury egg pudding. We drink two very good types of flavored water with fruit pieces. We pay 98 CNY.

Our next destination is the Sūzhōu Museum, in 204 Dongbei Jie, where the entry is free.
The iron and glass architecture of the building is a kind of modern interpretation of a Sūzhōu garden, with even a central pond.
The museum contains various exhibitions dedicated to antiquity, modernity, but especially to the time when Suzhou was the capital of Chinese culture.

Having seen so many Chinese antiquities exhibitions in a few days, the part I preferred was the one dedicated to Chinese-born French artist Ru Xiao Fan, featuring playmobil men, vibrant colors and plants with sexual connotations.

We decided to visit other historical monuments, but we end up spending the rest of the afternoon in Pingjiang Lu, a road that still shows traces of the old Sūzhōu, especially because of the channel that runs along it. In fact once Sūzhōu was a real water town, but today most of the canals have been sealed and transformed into roads.
On this channel, however, still sail boaters with pointed straw hat who seek to recreate the ancient atmosphere for the tourists.

But this road fascinates us not only because of its tradition: it is packed with beautiful hipster shops selling original items of all kinds, even handmade.
There are also plenty of cafes and stalls selling food that looks tasty.
At the end of the day, in addition to a lot of gifts (including a cheap mahjong, at last), my booty is: a notebook with "traditional" binding and cover, Moomin's washi tape (7 CNY) and two handmade hair bands with wire core (40 CNY).
It is time to return to the station. We lose the bus and the next one puts us a lot to arrive, so much we are afraid of losing the train, afraid that fortunately it turns out unjustified.

When we arrived at Shanghai Hongqiao we came across the most beautiful toilet advertising ever: "feeling the love", just the right catch phrase.

As we are really tired we decide to dine at one of the many restaurants of the station. Those of Chinese traditional cuisine don't inspire us. Since there are only large chains branches, we decide to try the number three among Chinese fast foods, Dicos. As the symbol is a bird, they serve mainly chicken. We take two menus with hamburgers, drinks and chicken wings at 89 CNY, which is by no means small compared to the Chinese standards. The wings were breaded with the bones according to the Chinese rule that the bones should not be removed before, but spit later. The breading was crisp and spicy and the dinner (to be a fast food menu) was satisfactory.
