Treasure Island (2012 tv series)

Il telefilm inglese in due puntate Treasure Island, realizzato nel 2012,come si intuisce facilmente, è l'ennesimo adattamento dell'omonimo romanzo di Robert Luis Stevenson. Dura un totale di 180 minuti, quindi un'ora e mezza a puntata.
Come nel libro, è ambientato a metà XIII sec. e parla di Jim Hawkins, un ragazzo che scopre la mappa per il tesoro dello spietato capitano pirata Flint e si imbarca con il dottor Livesay e il capitano Trelawney in una spedizione per recuperarlo. Ma sul tesoro vuole mettere le mani anche la ciurma del defunto capitano, guidata da Long John Silver.
Per quanto riguarda gli avvenimenti della storia il telefilm, anche se dà più spazio ai personaggi femminili, cosa che ho apprezzato (nonostante la madre di Jim sia alquanto irritante), è abbastanza fedele al libro.
Invece, già verso metà della prima puntata, proprio mentre esprimevo apprezzamenti sulla fedeltà al romanzo, i caratteri di alcuni personaggi si discostano radicalmente dagli originali. Mentre Jim e Long John Silver, per fortuna, subiscono poche modifiche, quelli più toccati sono il dottor Livesay, che diventa un codardo, e il capitano Trelawney, trasformato in un avaraccio senza cuore. Questo influisce sullo svolgimento della storia con un paio di scene diverse. Non sono una purista, ma in questo caso le modifiche creano un paio di momenti completamente privi di senso, fra cui, tragicamente, il finale (spoiler in bianco: Jim si schiera dalla parte di Trelawney anche se voleva ucciderlo e ancora peggio, Jim, alla fine di tutto, mentre sua madre è ridotta a fare la cuoca in un bordello perché le hanno pignorato la locanda -ebbene sì- BUTTA IL TESORO IN MARE!!! Dopo tutta la fatica, quando ce l'aveva fra le mani e senza che nessuno faccia nulla. Ci sono rimasta di sasso).
Nonostante i difetti, bisogna dire che è una serie ben recitata, che conta attori del calibro di Elija Wood.
Niente da eccepire anche sui costumi che sono davvero belli, anche se forse un po'troppo originali (i tatuaggi in faccia di Long John...mah!). Le musiche sono carine (e finalmente la gente sbronza canta come gente sbronza invece di sembrare il coro dell'opera) e la fotografia, non è imperdibile, ma neanche male.
Non lo consiglio solo a causa del finale stupido, ed è un peccato perché avrebbe potuto essere un ottimo prodotto.

The two-part British television series Treasure Island , shot in 2012, as you can imagine, is yet another adaptation of the homonymous novel by Robert Louis Stevenson. It lasts a total of 180 minutes, an hour and a half per episode.
As in the book, it's set in the XIII sec. and tells the story of of Jim Hawkins, a boy who discovers the map of the treasure of the ruthless pirate Captain Flint and embarks with Dr. Livesay and Captain Trelawney on an expedition to retrieve it. But the the crew of the deceased captain, led by Long John Silver wants to get their hands on it too.
Regarding the events of the story the series, even if it gives more space to the female characters, which I enjoyed (despite Jim's mother is somewhat irritating) , it's quite faithful to the book.
Instead, towards the middle of the first episode, just as I expressed appreciation on the faithfulness to the novel, some characters start to differ radically from the originals. While Jim and Long John Silver, fortunately, undergo few changes, the most affected are Dr. Livesay, who becomes a coward, and Captain Trelawney, turned into a heartless miser. This has an impact on the course of history with a couple of different scenes. I'm not a purist, but in this case the changes create a couple of pure nonsense moments , including, tragically, the ending (spoiler in white: Jim takes the side of Trelawney even if he wanted to kill him, and even worse, Jim, at the end of it all, while his mother is reduced to work as a cook in a brothel because theyr inn was seized -yes- THROW THE TREASURE IN THE SEA! After all the effort, when he had it in his hands while no one does anything to stop him. I was stunned).
Despite the flaws, it must be said that it is a well-acted series, which counts actors like Elijah Wood.
Nothing to complain also about the costumes that are really beautiful, though perhaps a little too original (tattoos on the face of Long John...mah!) . The music is nice (and finally drunk people sings like drunk people instead of sounding like the opera chorus) and the photography, it is not a must, but not bad either.

I do not recommend it just because of the stupid ending, which is a shame because it could have been a great product.
